The disappearance of Salvadoran military personnel on Haitian territory is sparking intense discussions within the political class of San Salvador. This critical situation is now pushing political actors to demand the immediate return of the troops engaged in security operations.

The ambush. According to the newspaper Rezo Nòdwès, the armed incident occurred precisely on October 18 in the commune of Croix-des-Bouquets. An armored vehicle transporting four Salvadoran aeronautical technicians to their camp was the target of a violent attack carried out on the road. The attackers on the scene used explosives as well as firearms, causing the complete burning and destruction of the military vehicle.

The unaccounted for. Although the four occupants of the armored car managed to extract themselves on their own from the burning cabin at the time of the assault, their whereabouts remained completely uncertain. As of Tuesday, October 20, no official confirmation had yet made it possible to establish the discovery of these technicians who had been reported missing since the attack.

The backlash. This dramatic event immediately fueled discussions within the Salvadoran political class concerning the security and risks incurred by military personnel sent abroad. Rafael Aguirre, who is running as a presidential candidate for the Farabundo Martí Front, is publicly and openly demanding the immediate repatriation of all of his country's military forces deployed in Haiti.

The legal framework. This demand for political withdrawal formulated by the candidate comes directly within a precise institutional schedule set by the authorities in San Salvador. A law promulgated on October 2 in the Salvadoran capital had indeed officially extended the national army's participation in the Gang Suppression Force until October 2027.
