The United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The current mandate, which was set to expire this Saturday, will therefore not be renewed. This situation led to difficult negotiations between the United States and Morocco, on one side, and Russia and the Polisario Front, on the other.

The voting process on two draft resolutions concerning Western Sahara was not initiated. This decision raises uncertainties regarding the future of the UN mission in the region and the resolution of the conflict.

Uncertainty for MINURSO

The renewal of the MINURSO mandate, which was due to end this Saturday, was not approved by the United Nations Security Council. This situation creates uncertainty regarding the immediate future of the mission and its impact on efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.
