Human remains discovered near Port-au-Prince have revived questions about the fate of four Salvadoran technicians who have been missing since an ambush on October 18, 2026. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele stated that these bodies did not belong to his men, while sharing the identity card of a Chadian soldier.

The attack. Four aviation technicians originally from El Salvador disappeared on October 18 during an ambush in Santo, in the commune of Croix-des-Bouquets. Salvadoran special forces were dispatched to Haiti to find them in the Cul-de-Sac plain. President Nayib Bukele demanded their release and affirmed his certainty of defeating the gangs despite predictions of failure.

The discovery. Charred human remains were found Saturday around Port-au-Prince and examined to determine if they belonged to the missing technicians. The Salvadoran president quickly denied this hypothesis on the X network, indicating that the bodies corresponded to a child, a taller man, and a person wearing a foreign uniform. According to him, a non-governmental organization had handed over these remains at the international airport.

The controversy. Photos published with his message showed a Chadian military identity card and a badge from the Gang Repression Force. The GRF subsequently indicated that this item belonged to a soldier from its Chadian contingent who had lost it during the search.

The testimony. The Chadian soldier concerned, Sossal Kamis Alhadj, appeared in a video to state that he was still alive. On Sunday, the GRF received new human remains from a third-party humanitarian organization, without being able to confirm whether they belonged to the four missing Salvadoran military personnel.
