A Chadian soldier serving with the Gang Repression Force (FRG) in Haiti has stated that he is still alive, just days after Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele had shared his identification card to support the opposite claim. Sossal Kamis Alhadj, whose military ID photo was shared by Mr. Bukele on social media, affirmed in a video viewed by Le Quotidien 509 that he is still alive.
According to The New York Times and sources consulted by Le Quotidien 509, human remains were discovered outside of Port-au-Prince on Saturday. These bodies were considered to belong to the four missing Salvadoran aircraft technicians who disappeared following an ambush on October 18. A military team sent from El Salvador to retrieve these remains was informed that the corpses belonged to members of the FRG.
Nayib Bukele quickly denied this information on X, stating: "No son nuestros hombres" ("These are not our men"). According to him, a non-governmental organization had handed over these remains at the airport claiming they belonged to the missing Salvadoran technicians. The president also indicated that the bodies were not those of the military personnel being sought and shared a photo of an identification document belonging to a Chadian soldier.
The identification card of the Chadian soldier, which was shared by Nayib Bukele, is now being questioned. It does not show any obvious signs of burning or significant deterioration despite claims that the body was entirely burned.
Several questions remain unanswered regarding the exact origin of the human remains and the true identity of the Chadian soldier whose identification card was found among these effects. Sossal Kamis Alhadj's statement adds a new element to the case but does not, on its own, allow for definitive conclusions.
Persistent Contradictions
Contradictions surrounding the identity of the human remains and the presence of the Chadian soldier among the items recovered persist. The fact that his identification card is intact while the body was allegedly burned raises many questions about the veracity of information disseminated so far.
Unresolved Questions
Several points still need clarification, including the exact circumstances under which the Chadian soldier's identification card was found and how it ended up among the items handed over with these remains.
