Simone Ovide Duvalier, mother of Jean-Claude Duvalier, was among the most influential figures of his presidency, according to HaitiLibre. The outlet gives her as the answer to a question in its quiz column "Did You Know ?". It places her at the centre of Duvalierist power. She was the wife of François Duvalier, and her supporters called her Mama Doc.
Charities and political appointments
HaitiLibre says she was known for her work with state charities. In its account, this activity helped build a maternal, caring image for the regime. Meanwhile, she is said to have exercised hidden control over political appointments and government affairs.
Beside her son
After 1971, the outlet says, her presence next to her son helped keep the family clan together at the top of the state. In the eyes of the public she was the protective but formidable face of the dynasty. HaitiLibre adds that she took part in staging authoritarian power and sustaining the family myth until the fall of both in 1986.
The question and the quiz series
The column asked: "Today, we ask : which member of Jean-Claude Duvalier’s family played a highly influential political and public-facing role during his presidency?" HaitiLibre says the column runs twice a week. Its facts come from the sheets that accompany correct answers in the outlet's quizzes.
HaitiLibre says 30 new quizzes were added on November 1st, 2026, bringing the total to 300 quizzes and 3,000 questions. According to the outlet, the quizzes are free and need no registration. Each has three levels of difficulty (easy, intermediate and hard) and is available in French and English.
