The Oklahoma City Thunder will announce the retirement of the number 0 jersey worn by former player Russell Westbrook during a ceremony scheduled for February 7. This decision is being made in recognition of his indelible legacy in the city and the state, said Clayton Bennett, chairman of the Thunder.
Westbrook, 37, played eleven seasons with the Thunder before retiring this year after one season with the Sacramento Kings. He is the club's all-time leader in several key statistics: games played (821), points scored (18,859), rebounds (5,760), assists (6,897), and minutes played (28,329).
Drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in 2008 with the fourth overall pick in the NBA draft, Westbrook then played for Oklahoma City after the team relocated. There, he formed an impressive trio with Kevin Durant and James Harden, reaching the NBA Finals in 2012 before being eliminated by the Miami Heat.
Although his career was marked by exceptional achievements - Westbrook holds the all-time record for the most triple-doubles (209) and is one of only three players to ever average a triple-double over a full season - he did not win an NBA championship.
