Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won Brazil's presidential election. Two outlets, Cubadebate and TV5Monde, each report it separately and describe a victory secured in a hard-fought race, where digital communication carried weight.
Re-elected in the runoff
According to TV5Monde, voting took place on Sunday, October 25, and the runoff was very tight. Cubadebate describes a complex contest that Lula ended up winning. The two available texts do not give the figures for the results.
A WhatsApp channel dubbed "Lula's army"
TV5Monde sees an unexpected weapon in the president's victory: a simple WhatsApp channel called "l'armée de Lula". Journalist Pascale Veysset devotes an analysis to it.
Ana Elisa Santos Silva, the lawmaker behind the digital campaign
Cubadebate profiles Ana Elisa Santos Silva, a 21-year-old Brazilian lawmaker, as the architect of a renewal of the Workers' Party (PT) digital campaign. The outlet notes that the traditional media ignored her. She bet on the selfie-style format and made technological sovereignty her banner. According to Cubadebate, she thus showed that elections are won at the ballot box, in the street and in the algorithms.
According to the same outlet, her efforts and those of the rest of the PT team tipped the balance in Lula's favor.
