A ship loaded with weapons, specialized vehicles and support equipment has left the Dominican port of Haina for Haiti. It is intended for the international force fighting the gangs, the GSF. At the departure, Daniela Kroslak, UN Assistant Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH), called the logistical help provided by the Dominican government essential.
What the UN praised
Daniela Kroslak thanked the Dominican authorities for making it possible to transfer equipment, supplies and personnel to Haiti. She added that this support also matters for other United Nations activities in Haitian territory, not just for the security operations under way.
A cargo from Bangladesh
The shipment, which set out from Bangladesh, reached the Dominican Republic thanks to German funding. The Dominican authorities, in coordination with the UN, arranged the logistics for getting it to Haiti. According to N Digital, it weighs about 525 tonnes.
Who was there
On the Dominican side, the vice minister for multilateral foreign policy, Rubén Silié, and the vice minister for management and operations of the foreign service, Ramón Pérez Fermín, attended the ceremony. Also present were Dushyant Joshi, head of operations and resource management at UNSOH, and Germany's ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Maike Friedrichsen.
Ramón Pérez Fermín represented Foreign Minister Víctor "Ito" Bisonó. He said that the effort of the entire international community, of everyone who believes in democracy and freedom, is starting to produce concrete results. He reiterated that the government of President Luis Abinader will continue to offer its logistical support to international initiatives for security in Haiti.
Ambassador Friedrichsen thanked the Dominican authorities and confirmed that her country would continue to support these efforts.
A reinforcement already mentioned before the Security Council
According to N Digital, Daniela Kroslak told the UN Security Council on 19 October that the force had doubled the number of personnel it has deployed since July thanks to international contingents, including Bangladeshi soldiers. She also expressly thanked the Dominican Republic and Germany for their logistical help.
