Residents expressed relief in Arcahaie on Saturday evening after the attackers pulled back, according to Infos Partage and HaitiInfoProj. Police officers and members of local self-defense brigades drove the armed groups back overnight between October 31 and November 1.
According to Rezo Nòdwès, bodies described as those of suspected gang members were reportedly dragged behind motorcycles through the streets. Two days earlier, a police operation reportedly left about twenty people dead, including the leader known by the nickname "Galaxy".
An unidentified member of a self-defense brigade said: "We still feel like we're getting mixed signals from the government. Tonight, we ignored them and did what we had to do." The member hopes their comrades will take note of the action.
According to Rezo Nòdwès, Saturday's offensive also reportedly killed several civilians and members of the self-defense brigades. The exact toll is not yet available for independent confirmation.
Wilner René, the mayor of Arcahaie, called for a stronger police response as violence persists in several localities. The situation raises questions about the limits of community self-defense and its impact on the authority of the state.
