In a 1-minute 58-second video posted on her digital platforms, Abigaïl Alexandre is calling on young Haitians to register on the electoral rolls and head to the polls, according to Juno7. She is targeting those who defend or reject candidates on the internet without necessarily taking part in the electoral process. For her, opinions posted on social media have no effect on the choice of future leaders if they are not accompanied by a vote.
Her criticism of debates on Facebook and TikTok
Abigaïl Alexandre questions the idea that the election will be decided on these two networks. "Are the elections going to take place on Facebook and TikTok? I really don't understand who made us believe that, or how we can think we can stay behind a phone and decide who we are going to install in the presidency or not," she says.
She believes that low youth turnout would give more weight to other voters, whose preferences might be different. "If we don't act, what we don't want to see is precisely what we risk seeing," she warns.
Voting rather than contesting after the fact
The young speaker warns against the temptation to only react once the results are known. She believes that those who are currently posting their preferences online must give themselves the means to defend them at the polling stations. "If we, the young people, actually vote in large numbers and clearly show the candidates we support, we will be more legitimate in defending our vote," she asserts.
She insists on young people born in the 2000s, many of whom could vote for the first time in a presidential election. Their choices, she believes, will have lasting consequences. She concludes with these words: "For once, let's dare to choose our future and that of our country."
