Spiritual songs one after another with nothing spoken between them. Two hours of hymns and choruses in Kreyòl and French, in the versions congregations actually sing.
Two hours of singing, and not a word between the pieces. Chant Espirityèl runs spiritual songs one after another, with no introduction, no commentary and no pause, to carry the last part of the night into the start of the day. There is no presenter and no reading: only music, from start to finish.
The repertoire mixes hymns and choruses in Kreyòl and French, the two languages Haitian congregations sing in. The choice falls on the versions believers actually sing on Sunday, with the melodies and words they know, rather than on studio arrangements that would make them hard to recognise. So you can sing along, find a hymn learned in childhood, or discover one sung by another community.
The programme comes right after the morning prayer and before the spoken programmes of the morning. It fills a time when people are getting up, washing, preparing a meal, and when a voice speaking to you would be one thing too many. For members of the diaspora who grew up with these songs in a church in Haiti, it is also a way to stay close to the music of their childhood, even far from home. Because nothing interrupts the music, you can switch on at any moment and step straight into the singing.
Every day. Live on nago.tv, on the NAGO Gospel channel.
