The morning debate — two sides of one question, each taken in turn and given equal time, with a moderator who holds them to the point.
One question, two positions, the same amount of time for each. Deba is NAGO News's morning debate, and its rule is simple: each side sets out its case in turn, without interruption, and then responds to the other. A moderator makes sure the discussion stays on the question at hand and brings the speakers back to the point when they drift.
The format is designed so that viewers can make up their own minds. Rather than a conversation won by whoever talks loudest, Deba presents two points of view in a balanced way, with the time needed to develop an argument. The programme's hour and a half allows it to get past ready-made phrases and see where the disagreement really lies. The rules are known from the start and apply in the same way to both sides, which lets viewers focus on substance rather than style.
Placed late in the morning, after the bulletins and the press review, Deba takes one of the subjects in the news and turns it into a question to be settled. In Haiti and across the diaspora, many conversations at home, in the neighbourhood or at work turn around the same questions; the programme offers a structured version of them, in which every argument is heard to the end. It differs from the evening's larger debate by its tighter format, limited to two positions facing each other.
