About the programme
After midnight the tempo drops and the vocals take over. Konpa After Dark brings together slow konpa and zouk chosen specifically for those hours, when nobody wants to dance fast any more but still wants music with some body to it.
The tracks play in their long album versions rather than the shortened edits made for radio. That changes how you listen: the intros take their time, the guitar solos and instrumental passages stay in, and a song can settle in instead of stopping after three minutes. Records from the eighties sit next to current releases, with no line drawn between the eras.
Konpa is Haiti's best-known dance music, and its slow songs are part of the memory of many families, at home and across the diaspora. For these two hours, Konpa After Dark extends the calmer mood that settles in at the end of Nago Nightshift, before Leve Ak Mizik comes to wake the household with a very different rhythm. It is a programme for people who stay up, get home late or listen from the other side of the world.
