Details of the prisoner transfer

According to information reported by Haïti Liberté, eighteen suspects were transferred this Sunday to Florida aboard a U.S. military aircraft. This group includes Joseph Félix Badio as well as seventeen Colombian nationals. This move comes as the investigation conducted in Haiti has not led to a trial after five years of proceedings.

Justification from Haitian authorities

The government maintains that this decision was made in "respect of the prerogatives and interests of the Republic of Haiti." The stated objective of the authorities is for "justice to be served to President Jovenel Moïse, his family, and the Haitian people." The newspaper Haïti Liberté highlights that this transfer to a foreign jurisdiction comes despite the existence of judicial proceedings within the national territory.

U.S. judicial context

The United States Department of Justice maintains that the plot targeting the Haitian head of state was partially financed and prepared from South Florida. According to Haïti Liberté, four other defendants were already found guilty by a U.S. federal jury in May 2026 in connection with this transnational case. The newspaper specifies that no suspect is supposed to be "deported or forced to leave the national territory for any reason whatsoever," while mentioning the existence of an "extradition mechanism."
