Eleven years ago, a Haitian born in Jérémie became an idol in Kolkata. In the 2014-2015 I-League season, India's top league, winger Sony Nordé scored 9 goals for Mohun Bagan, one of the country's oldest clubs, crowned champion on the final day. The page AmericasKickoff brought the memory back this week, and it was shared thousands of times.

A title snatched on the final day

Coming from Bangladesh, where he had been named the league's best player with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi, Sony Nordé joined Mohun Bagan in 2014. In his first season he finished as the I-League's third-highest scorer with 9 goals in 19 games. AmericasKickoff also credits him with 13 assists.

The title was decided on May 31, 2015, in Bangalore, in a head-to-head clash with defending champions Bengaluru FC. Mohun Bagan snatched a late 1-1 draw and finished champions with 39 points, two more than their rival.

Five years in Kolkata

Sony Nordé stayed at Mohun Bagan until 2019, with 37 goals in 88 games across all competitions. He also won the Federation Cup in 2016 and scored in three straight AFC Cup games that year. He was loaned to Mumbai City in the Indian Super League in 2015 and 2016. A serious knee injury later slowed his career.

A product of Boca Juniors' reserve teams in Argentina, he went on to play in Azerbaijan, in Malaysia, where he captained Kedah, and in Indonesia, with Malut United in 2025.

27 caps for Haiti

With the Grenadiers, Sony Nordé earned 27 caps and scored 2 goals between 2007 and 2017. He was part of Haiti's squads for the 2015 Gold Cup and the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
