Nigeria's Flamingos won the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in Morocco, beating Japan 2-1 in the final, Nigerian daily Premium Times, Channels Television and TheCable reported. Nigeria thus becomes the first African country to win the tournament.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring before half-time with a long-range shot that the Japanese goalkeeper failed to hold, according to Premium Times' live coverage. Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead early in the second half, before Fuki Ito pulled one back for Japan late in the match.

A first for Africa

"Flamingos are world champions for the first time ever," Premium Times wrote at the final whistle. Channels Television called the title "historic." The team is coached by Akeem Busari, according to Premium Times.

The men's U-17 World Cup is next

On the Haitian side, it is the men's U-17 Grenadiers who are preparing for their own World Cup, in Qatar. As NAGO has reported, Haiti will open its tournament against France on November 19.
