Three Goals in Twenty-Seven Minutes
The details that follow come from an AFP dispatch published by TV5Monde. Lens dominated the first half but failed to score. Franjo Ivanovic hit the post at the 14th minute. At the 41st minute, Jorne Spileers saved Junior Kadile's shot off the line.
Bruges opened the scoring in stoppage time (45+3). On a corner, Nicolo Tresoldi forced Robin Risser to intervene, and the Lens goalkeeper pushed the ball into the feet of Hans Vanaken. Joaquin Seys doubled the lead at the 50th minute. Carlos Forbs, set up by Hugo Vetlessen, scored the third goal at the 72nd.
Shortly before this corner, the match was briefly stopped due to smoke bombs thrown by Lens supporters. The AFP suggests that this may have distracted the players.
Cahuzac's Starting Lineup
Yannick Cahuzac made eight changes from the league game won against Troyes on Saturday. In the defensive axis, Udol, Baidou, and Aguilar formed an unprecedented trio. Maik Nawrocki, Jonathan Gradit, and Ismaelo Ganiou were absent, and Jean-Clair Todibo lacked rhythm. Thorgan Hazard and Ivanovic played up front. Florian Thauvin only came on after the second goal.
A Tougher Schedule Ahead
Lens had already lost at home to Sporting Portugal a week earlier. Bruges, meanwhile, won at San Siro against Inter. According to AFP, the Belgian club also beat Monaco (4-1) and Marseille (3-0) at this stage of the competition last season.
Lens will host Côme in early November, then face Leipzig, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
The League Could Be Disrupted
According to But! Football Club, citing La Source Parisienne, discussions are underway between authorities and the LFP about postponing PSG-Lyon, and possibly the entire eighth round of Ligue 1. Announced demonstrations this weekend would mobilize law enforcement. Lens's match against Paris FC, scheduled for Saturday at 8:45 PM, would be affected. No official decision has been announced.
