The US Congress approved new sanctions targeting Russia and its allies for their role in the war in Ukraine on Thursday. These measures, supported by Donald Trump, include the authority granted to the president to impose tariffs up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian gas and oil, including China and India. The adoption took place during the night from September 16 to 17, 2026.

The text adopted by Congress includes for the first time sanctions specifically targeting Russia's ghost fleet, an initiative welcomed by Kiev which had recently been hit by new Russian attacks. This action constitutes a significant step in American efforts to punish Moscow and its allies for their involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

The bill was approved after a similar adoption in August by the US Senate. This initiative marks the first significant action of Congress since Donald Trump's return to the presidency and is part of an ongoing effort to impose more severe economic sanctions on Russia.
