The Embassy of Haiti in the Dominican Republic disavows the statements made by the Grenadiers after their victory

The Haitian Embassy in the Dominican Republic has officially distanced itself from statements made by players on the national football team, according to Le Quotidien 509. In a communication dated October 2, the diplomatic mission stated that these remarks, made "in the heat of competition and with the intensity typical of sporting emotion," do not reflect the position of the Haitian state. It emphasized that the island of Hispaniola is shared between two sovereign countries and reiterated the commitments linked to the 1929 Border Treaty.

The statements at the root of the controversy

The controversy erupted in Santo Domingo following the Haitian team's 4-1 victory over the Dominicans at the Félix Sánchez stadium. According to the newspaper, striker Wilson Isidor, who scored two goals, stated on camera: "Hispaniola is Haiti. Haiti is here." The following day, Duckens Nazon shared the phrase "Hispaniola es para nosotros," translated as "Hispaniola is for us," on social media. In response, José Deschamps, who heads the Dominican Football Federation, denounced an infringement on his country's sovereignty and announced that he would file an appeal with the international bodies governing the sport.

Tensions surrounding the match and sporting sanctions

According to estimates reported in the press, approximately 25,000 Haitian spectators traveled for this event, which was classified as high-risk. Clashes occurred before kickoff when people forced their way in while the stadium was sold out. Following this unrest, Dominican Minister of Sports Kelvin Cruz banned the Grenadiers from accessing sports complexes in his country.
