Historian Jean Fouchard passed away 36 years ago
Jean Fouchard died in Port-au-Prince 36 years ago, on September 30, 1990, in the city where he was born on March 2, 1912. A historian, writer, journalist, and diplomat, he dedicated a large part of his work to the society of Saint-Domingue.

A voice in the Haitian press
He began his career in Charles Moravia's magazine Le Temps, then contributed to La Relève, which he eventually ran. He also wrote for Haïti-Journal, les Cahiers d'Haïti, L'Assaut, Le Petit impartial, Le Nouvelliste, and Papyrus, as well as for the journal of the Haitian Society of History and Geography.
In the service of government
Presidents Sténio Vincent and Dumarsais Estimé entrusted him with official duties, notably within the private office of the President of the Republic. He also served as commissioner-general for the bicentennial international exhibition of Port-au-Prince. In 1946, he went to Havana, Cuba, as minister plenipotentiary. On February 22, 1983, he became vice-chairman of the board of directors of the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon.
Historical works
He published Les Marrons du syllabaire in 1953, followed in 1955 by Plaisirs de Saint-Domingue and Le Théâtre à Saint-Domingue. Les Marrons de la liberté and Langue et Littérature des aborigènes d'Ayiti were published in 1972. He received the Caribbean literary prize and was a member of the Academy of Overseas Sciences.
