Antoine Griezmann has been keeping his distance from the French media since arriving in Major League Soccer, and his attitude is drawing comments from football observers. Jérôme Rothen and Pierre Ménès have both reacted.
Jérôme Rothen's reaction
According to RMC Sport, Jérôme Rothen spoke out on Monday during his show "Rothen s'enflamme" on RMC. He commented on remarks made by Antoine Griezmann, who has wanted to remain discreet with the French press since moving to the United States. Jérôme Rothen said he was "sad" to see the relationship between the player and his country end this way. The RMC Sport summary does not detail his arguments.
Pierre Ménès's assessment
Football.fr reports that Pierre Ménès was asked about the subject by a subscriber on his YouTube channel. He said he was not surprised by the clip he had seen on "Téléfoot." For him, France has a tendency to label people, and the player was long the darling of everyone.
He also admitted that he could not explain why the forward holds a grudge against the French press. He added: "I don't get the impression at all that it has taken sides against him in everything that has happened."
Pierre Ménès then became harsher: "Nothing justifies the way he left Les Bleus, ostensibly refusing any form of tribute from the Federation and self-cultivating a form of resentment."
A comparison with Karim Benzema
Pierre Ménès compared the situation to that of Karim Benzema: "After (Karim) Benzema, another one saying 'one day you will know the truth.' Yes, but when, guys? At some point, if you don't want to inform people, don't complain that bullshit is being spread."
He concluded by judging the player's attitude "a bit disappointing." He added that "the image you project doesn't necessarily always correspond to who you really are."
A break with Les Bleus announced in 2024
Football.fr recalls that the player had announced the end of his time with the French national team on September 30, 2024. The site writes that he did so without giving any real explanation.
