Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season in the Champions League on Wednesday, losing 3-2 to Fenerbahçe. The Reds led twice during the match but could not hold off the Turkish side.

Fenerbahçe opened the scoring through Trey Nyoni (0-1, 25th). Mason Greenwood equalized soon after from a deflected free kick (1-1, 29th), sending both teams into the dressing rooms level.

After the break, Alexander Isak put Fenerbahçe ahead with a powerful header (1-2, 69th). Liverpool got back level through Archie Brown, who capitalized on an opposition error (2-2, 73rd), before he set up the final goal for Vedat Muriqi six minutes later (3-2).

The defeat underlines Liverpool's defensive weakness: they now have the second-worst defence among the 24 best teams in the Champions League.

Match background

Liverpool were in fifth place in the provisional standings after the defeat. Fenerbahçe, for their part, picked up their first win of the European campaign, having previously drawn two and lost one.
