62 years ago, on November 4, 1964, Charles Dorismond was born in Port-au-Prince. Known as Bigga Haitian, he was the singer who brought a Haitian artist onto the Jamaican reggae scene.

A family of musicians

His father, André Dorismond, was the lead singer for The Webert Sicot Group, one of the pioneering compas bands. As a child, Charles moved to New York, to Flatbush in the Brooklyn borough, in the heart of a Jamaican community steeped in reggae. In 1987, an Admiral Bailey concert at the Reggae Lounge convinced him to become a reggae singer.

From first hit to albums

In 1989, he released his first single, "Haiti A Weh Mi From," which reached number one on the Haitian charts. The album I Am Back followed in 1997, then Binghi Mon. He shared the stage with Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, and Junior Reid, and also opened for Lil' Kim and Jay-Z. In 2006, he signed with Walkup Records, which released "Gi Me Da Weed," followed by the album Sak Pasé in 2009. Money Time was released in 2021. Artists like Wyclef Jean cite him as an influence.

A tribute to his brother

His brother Patrick Dorismond was killed by New York police officers on March 16, 2000. Bigga paid tribute to him with "Tribute to Patrick Dorismond," built on the track "Murderer," which Barrington Levy gave to him.
