The United Nations has confirmed receiving a letter signed by Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, requesting dialogue in Haiti. This move comes as a large Salvadoran military contingent has been deployed to the area following an ambush. |
The attack. Four Salvadoran aviation technicians were reported missing on October 18 after an attack on their vehicle in Croix-des-Bouquets. The Haitian government has described this event as a kidnapping, while El Salvador has dispatched more than 2,000 soldiers to find them and fight the gangs. |
Bukele rejects UNA-Haiti allegations that Salvadoran forces bombed civilians in Haiti Faces of Haiti |
The deployment. This military reinforcement is operating largely outside the mandate of the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has also rejected accusations of bombing civilians made by the organization UNA-Haiti. |
The letter. Dated November 1, the missive from Wilson Joseph asserts that the missing Salvadoran soldiers are dead and demands the dispatch of a UN delegation for mediation. The gang leader states he is in favor of laying down arms while blaming other groups for the violence. |
The position. Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed on Monday that the UN received this letter without endorsing its content or recognizing its author. The organization reiterates that any security operation must strictly respect international law and protect civilians. |
