Haitian gospel from both ends of its history: the standards congregations have sung for decades, and what is being written and recorded now.
Haitian gospel has a long memory, and it is still being written. Gospel Kreyòl brings both of those realities into a single programme: the standards congregations have sung for decades, and the songs being written and recorded now. The programme does not set them against each other: it plays them one after the other, as two moments in the same story.
On one side are the standards, the ones people know by heart without remembering learning them, which accompany services, weddings, wakes and funerals. On the other is today's output, with new writers, new sounds and lyrics that speak of everyday life now. Hearing them side by side shows what has changed in this music and what has stayed: the language, the place of praise, the love of singing together. Kreyòl comes first, the language in which many believers naturally pray and sing.
The programme fills the early afternoon, for an hour and a half, after the midday prayer. It is a time for music without demands, something to listen to while working, driving or resting. It speaks to several generations at once: older listeners find the songs of their youth, younger ones discover where the music they listen to today comes from. For the diaspora, it is a direct link to the church music of home, old and new.
