Alexander Zverev became the 30th player to reach the top of the ATP rankings since they were introduced in 1973, at the Paris Masters 1000. However, he was knocked out in the second round by Italy's Lorenzo Musetti (24th), 7-6(5), 6-2.

Novak Djokovic, a seven-time winner of the tournament, failed to advance at the Paris Masters 1000 and was knocked out by Australia's Rinky Hijikata (83rd), 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. It is the first time since 2017 that the Serb has not played in the later stages of this tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz made a successful start and reached the last 16 after beating Alex Michelsen (35th), 7-6(4), 6-3. He will next face Matteo Berrettini, the last player to give him trouble, who knocked out Ugo Humbert.

"I feel like I'm the only world number one in the history of tennis who has to explain why it's normal that I'm world number one. I think I deserve to be where I am, even if I lost today," Zverev said at a press conference.
