Dominican Health: Significant Reduction in Malaria
The Ministry of Health, through the Epidemiology Directorate, reported a notable decrease in cases of diseases under special surveillance. Three confirmed cases of dengue were reported during epidemiological week 34, bringing the cumulative total since January to 282 cases, remaining within favorable limits of the endemic corridor.

Regarding leptospirosis and cholera, no new infections were reported during this period. The ministry emphasizes the importance for the public to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites at home, recommending the use of chlorine in stored water tanks and covering reservoirs.
Malaria saw a significant decrease. Two cases were reported this week in the province of San Juan, compared to 17 cases during the same period in 2025. The cumulative total for the year is also lower: 136 cases so far in 2026, compared to 728 in 2025.
No respiratory virus or flu-like illness was reported during this epidemiological week. Indicators remain within the respective success zones of the endemic corridors for these diseases.
The epidemiological bulletin also reports 4 maternal deaths and 41 infant deaths last week, including 34 neonatal deaths. The cumulative total up to SE-34 is 93 maternal deaths and 1227 infant deaths.
In observance of World Cystic Fibrosis Day on September 8, the WHO highlights the importance of newborn screening for this chronic genetic disease. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the heel prick test conducted within the first 15 days of life is an effective tool for early diagnosis and offers significant prospects for improving quality of life.
