President Luis Abinader has been urged by an official to give more attention to the project to rebuild nave F-1, which was destroyed in the fire that broke out in June 2025.

The incident seriously damaged the infrastructure and destroyed a large amount of goods stored in the commercial space. The roof is now gone and the site is open to the rain because of the devastation caused by the flames.

An official said that experts have already examined the structure in preparation for the reconstruction work, which is due to begin in a year. Merca Santo Domingo does not yet have a general fire protection system, although an assessment of the current budget includes installing one.

Lara said the market was looking for ways to meet safety needs and improve the situation. A fire suppression system is planned for all the naves, but that will depend on the available budget and the required approval.

The director also mentioned that steps have been taken to reduce the risk associated with preparing food on site. The cafeterias and restaurants currently located in the naves will be moved to secure outdoor areas, to minimize the potentially dangerous use of equipment such as gas burners and stoves.
