Mona Guérin, writer and radio voice, was born 92 years ago

92 years ago, on October 9, 1934, Mona Rouzier, known as Mona Guérin, the Haitian educator, writer, journalist and screenwriter, was born in Port-au-Prince.

Formation and teaching

The daughter of Gontran Rouzier and Camille Duplessy, she studied with the Sisters of Saint-Joseph de Cluny and at the Sainte-Rose de Lima boarding school. A scholarship from the Canada Council for the Arts allowed her to study contemporary literature at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. Upon returning to Haiti, she married the engineer Joseph Guérin, with whom she had 2 daughters. She taught from 1965 to 1980.

The pen and the airwaves

From 1961 to 1965, she wrote a weekly column in Le Nouvelliste. She wrote the scripts for the television series Gala de galerie on Télé-Haïti from 1977 to 1981, followed by the radio series Roye ! Les voilà, broadcast from 1982 to 1994, as well as some sixty episodes of Petit théâtre de Magik-Stéréo.

She hosted numerous shows: Récréation avec tante Mariette in 1971 on Radio Nouveau-Monde, 3 rendez-vous du dimanche on Radio-Métropole from 1972 to 1982, Dieu à tout moment from 1992 to 1994, and in 1997, alongside her daughter Élisabeth Guérin Parisot, Comment vivons-nous on Magik-Stéréo.

Books and distinctions

In 1983, she was made a Knight of the Academic Palms. Mona Guérin died on December 30, 2011 in Port-au-Prince from acute pneumonia.
