Bel was a distinguished student and captain of the football team at Springfield High School before being placed under electronic monitoring by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the loss of his temporary protected status. His family claims that these pressures led to the young man's suicide.

Musician John Legend participated in a virtual fundraiser for the Haitian Support Center, which reported raising over 0,000 according to Religion News Service. In Washington, Pastor Carl Ruby and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen discussed the case during a hearing at the Capitol.

This mobilization comes as Haitians face detention and deportation proceedings. A neo-Nazi group, Blood Tribe, also demonstrated in downtown with flags bearing swastikas.
