Migrants exceed 9 billion in remittances

Financial transfers made by migrants to their relatives in low- or middle-income countries reached a record 8.6 billion in 2025, according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which released its report on Monday. This amount represents an increase of 94% compared to the past ten years.

According to Rezo Nòdwès, financial transfers have grown faster than the number of migrants from these countries, which has only increased by 28%. Approximately 220 million migrants and diaspora members thus support around one billion individuals.

These transfers are primarily used to finance essential needs such as food, housing, and basic services for nearly three-quarters of the amount. The rest is used for health care, education, savings, or economic activities.

Asia-Pacific remains the main beneficiary with 4.9 billion, followed by Africa (4.2 billion) and Latin America and the Caribbean, which saw a 132% increase to reach 8.6 billion.

IFAD highlights that these transfers now exceed four times the global public development aid as well as foreign direct investments in these countries.

Finally, the cost of transferring remains a major obstacle: in 2025, fully digital operations cost an average of 4.6% of the amount sent compared to 7.3% for non-digital services. IFAD calls for reducing these fees and improving access to financial services.
