Education and early positions

She completed her secondary education at the Centre d'études secondaires in Port-au-Prince in 1966, then earned a degree in economics from Queens College in the United States. She began her professional career at the Bank of Nova Scotia. In 1979, she became assistant director of the Port-au-Prince international airport. From 1989 to 1991, she was director of research at the Institut culturel Karl Levêque.

She published several works, including *La quête de l'ailleurs*, with Chemins critiques, and *Le refus de l'oubli*. She founded FOKAL (Fondasyon Konesans ak Libète), which she presided over.

At the head of the government

After a brief stint at the Ministry of Justice, she was appointed on June 23, 2008, by President René Préval to replace Jacques-Édouard Alexis, who had been ousted by the Senate following the food riots of April 8, 2008. She received the confidence of the Assembly on July 17, then that of the Senate on July 31, and took office on September 5, 2008.

She thus became the country's second female Prime Minister, after Claudette Werleigh, who had held the position between 1995 and 1996.

The end of her term

On October 30, 2009, the Senate ousted her by a vote of 18 to 10, with 1 abstention.
