Mia Mottley drops out of the race to become secretary-general of the United Nations
Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados stated that her responsibilities towards her country and the Caribbean region influenced her decision not to run for the position of next UN Secretary-General. During an exchange organized by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Mottley explained: "I must lead a country and look after a region." She also mocked the difficulties that someone with her direct style might encounter.

Mia Mottley has become an important voice on climate finance and reform of the global financial system. During an event at the UN General Assembly, she supported Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the Guyanese ambassador to the UN, as a candidate for the position of secretary-general.
The UN Charter stipulates that the Security Council recommends a candidate to the General Assembly. The five permanent members of the council can block a nomination by exercising their veto power.
Mottley indicated that she will remain focused on her responsibilities and the challenges faced by Caribbean countries, despite speculations about her candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General. No woman has yet held this post since the founding of the UN in 1945.
