Martial Célestin was born 113 years ago in Ganthier

113 years ago, on October 4, 1913, Martial Célestin was born in Ganthier. After studying law and economics at the Paris Faculty of Law, he became a lawyer in 1936. He joined the diplomatic service at the Haitian embassy in France in 1950, then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an assistant in 1953 and secretary-general in 1956. The Duvalier dictatorship subsequently eclipsed his career.

Legal commitment and teaching

Martial Célestin became president of the Port-au-Prince Bar Association in 1977. The following year, he joined the State University of Haiti as a professor, a role he held until 1986. From 1978 to 2005, he notably taught rural law at the Faculty of Law of Port-au-Prince, as well as at the Jean-Price-Mars University, the Military Academy, and the National Diplomatic and Consular Academy.

Head of government and distinctions

On February 9, 1988, President Leslie Manigat chose him to occupy the position of Prime Minister, combined with that of Minister of Justice. A coup d'état overthrew his administration on June 20, 1988, and abolished his post. Throughout his life, he accumulated several medals and titles, becoming an officer of the Legion of Honor and an honorary doctor of the Jean-Price-Mars University and the Union of Private Universities of Haiti. He passed away on February 4, 2011, in Port-au-Prince at the age of 97.
