According to the IOM, gang violence has led to mass displacement of residents. At Kenskoff, the situation is particularly critical with over 10,000 people having fled their homes after massacres carried out in July and August by these armed groups.

The IOM indicates that these events have resulted in a record number of forced returns, reaching 28,104 people in August. This is the highest monthly figure since systematic tracking of movements began in 2021.

During the first eight months of the year 2026, nearly 197,917 individuals were forcibly returned. This trend represents an increase of 11% compared to the same period in 2025.

The agency also notes that more than 40 people died during assaults in the village of Kenskoff, contributing to the recent mass displacement observed.

Furthermore, the IOM has provided assistance to nearly 93,878 people in Haiti this year, but laments that its appeal for mobilization for funding of approximately million is only covered at 54%.

The Dominican Republic is the main source country for forced returns, with nearly 907 people being forced to return each day.

Humanitarian Efforts

The IOM and its partners continue to provide aid to displaced persons in various areas such as shelter, health, psychosocial support, and site management. These efforts aim to stabilize the situation and improve living conditions for those who have been forcibly displaced.
