"I can't say much," he said in tears. "It's a lot of emotions." Messi said he was particularly touched by the memory of his father, who died shortly after the 2026 World Cup final where Argentina failed to win the title.
He recalled that playing for the national team was "the most beautiful thing that could happen." He also expressed gratitude to everyone who helped him achieve his dream of winning the World Cup, the Copa América, and the Finalissima.
The match was marked by the applause of the 85,000 spectators at the Monumental Stadium for every action Messi took on the field. After the final whistle, a light show performed with drones projected an image of the number 10 and the famous white and sky-blue jersey.
Messi also praised the efforts of young players who will take over: "Now, I ask you to be united in supporting these new boys who represent the future."
He concluded his speech by thanking all Argentinians present and those who followed his career around the world. "I just want to say that I love you and that you will be missed," he added.
