Lebrun calls for a stronger justice system
The 2026-2027 judicial year got underway with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and institutional representatives in attendance. Jean-Joseph Lebrun, president of the Court of Cassation, officially opened the judicial year across the entire country.

Government commissioner Me Carvès Jean lamented the lack of effective investigations and the difficult conditions inside the courts. He called for a strong, independent justice system that protects citizens. Patrick Pierre-Louis, president of the Port-au-Prince bar association, pointed out that the judicial system has been grappling with the same problems for thirty years.
Fils-Aimé stated: "The rule of law requires a strong, independent justice system that commands the trust of citizens." He added that a more effective judicial year must help curb impunity and strengthen confidence in the system.
Current Problems
Speakers highlighted the difficulties facing the judicial system, notably inadequate facilities, insufficient security for magistrates, and a lack of effectiveness in the fight against corruption.
Reform Outlook
The Prime Minister outlined several initiatives underway to bolster the judicial apparatus. He stressed that the goal is to shift from a justice system that merely reacts to crimes to one that dismantles mafia networks.
