The number of elderly people will soar by 2050

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, the United Nations Secretary-General pointed out that the global population aged over 60 is expected to rise to about 2.1 billion by 2050, up from 1.2 billion now. This increase represents 20 percent of the entire world population.

As part of the International Day of Older Persons observed by the United Nations this year under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives", various stakeholders were invited to think about improving the lives of seniors. The Secretary-General noted that this trend reflects a significant improvement in the field of health and the strengthening of social protections.

"In many regions, men and women are living longer than ever before," António Guterres stated. However, this progress comes with a number of challenges that require reflection on how our societies can better support these growing populations.
