Mayotte: The SMAE delays water reopening until noon on October 18

The Mahorai Water Company (SMAE) has delayed the distribution of drinking water on its network from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. from October 16 to October 18, inclusive. This decision modifies the usual schedule of water cycles to compensate for a daily production decrease estimated at 2,000 cubic meters.

This measure affects many localities in Mayotte, including Bouyouni, Longoni Village, Kangani, Trevani, Koungou, Majicavo 1 and 2, Hauts Vallons, Kawéni Village, Bonovo, Mtsapéré, Doujani, Mtsangamouji, Chembenyumba, and Mliha. Several areas of Mamoudzou — Center, Boboka, Covered Market, Cavani, Convalescence, 100 Villas, and Vétivert — as well as the Labattoir and Pamandzi sectors are also affected by these delayed schedules.

A breakdown at the Bouyouni plant

This malfunction stems from a mechanical incident involving a faulty hydraulic equipment in a clarifier. The treatment infrastructure at Bouyouni was forced to stop one of its two production lines to allow for technical intervention.

The ongoing operations require the complete draining and cleaning of the affected clarifier. The restoration of production on this technical installation is expected for the evening of Saturday, October 17.

Sanitary guidelines for households

The distributor has communicated a series of sanitary recommendations to be followed when the water returns to the taps. Users must first ensure that their taps remain closed before letting a thin stream of water flow during the first few minutes.

It is then necessary to wait until the liquid regains its complete transparency before storing it for non-food tasks. During the twelve hours following the resumption of supply, SMAE orders that water be boiled before drinking or using it for cooking.
