France has slightly increased its lead over Portugal for fifth place in the UEFA index, with a total of 70.296 points compared to 66.550 for Portuguese teams. This week started off tough: on Tuesday, Lille lost to Arsenal (0-3) and Lens was defeated by Sporting CP (0-2). However, Wednesday and Thursday saw important French victories that helped turn the situation around. PSG won against Manchester City (3-2), followed by Olympique Lyon defeating Crystal Palace (3-2), as well as Stade Rennes beating OFI Crete (2-1). AS Monaco also won its match against Olympiacos Sofia (2-1).
Despite these wins, Marseille suffered a loss at the Velodrome against Olympiacos (0-1), and the Portuguese record was less impressive with two wins and three losses. This situation allows France to improve its position, although its point cushion remains fragile.
Fifth place is strategically crucial as it guarantees seven spots in European competitions, including four direct qualifications for the Champions League. Dropping to sixth place would lose one European spot and only qualify two clubs directly for this lucrative competition.
