The National Commission for the Fight Against Drugs (CONALD) and the Brazilian embassy are looking at several forms of cooperation to strengthen the Haitian institution's capacity. According to Vant Bèf Info, the proposals cover staff training, the delivery of equipment and support for prevention campaigns against psychoactive substances.
A Delegation Received in Pétion-Ville
A CONALD delegation met with the Brazilian ambassador, Luis Guilherme Nascentes da Silva, on Wednesday, November 5. The meeting took place at the Brazilian chancery in Pétion-Ville.
The delegation's members included magistrate Aly Casséus, chief of staff of the Coordination Bureau, and Edwige Louis, financial director. Valérie Jacques-Routier, director of the Haitian Drug Observatory (OHD), and Féline Simmond's, deputy director of the Supply Reduction Directorate, were also part of it.
The commission's representatives described its missions, how it operates and its main activities. They also raised the structural, budgetary and logistical difficulties that hold back its work.
Scholarships, Equipment and Campaigns
The ambassador put forward the idea of scholarships and technical internships in Brazil for the commission's staff. He asked the various directorates to send him their needs, so that the areas to be addressed first could be determined.
Computer equipment and office equipment were also mentioned as a possible contribution. The two sides also looked at technical and financial support for national campaigns meant to inform the public of the risks linked to the use of these substances.
An Upcoming Visit to CONALD
At the end of the meeting, Luis Guilherme Nascentes da Silva repeated that the Brazilian government stood ready to support Haiti. He announced that he would soon visit CONALD's headquarters. The date of that visit has not been given.
