Two towns retaken
Driven back at Saint-Marc, Toussaint turned against Saint-Raphaël and Saint-Michel, which were then held by Jean-François's forces. After two days of fighting, the republicans retook the two towns and dealt a heavy defeat to the Spanish.
Toussaint's account
On October 21, from Saint-Michel, Toussaint reported on the operation to Lavaux. He regretted that nightfall had allowed some of the Spanish to escape, but announced the capture of two officers and about fifty soldiers. His own ranks counted many dead and wounded. The enemy had left behind weapons, artillery, and ammunition. He added that his cavalry, after taking the advanced fort of Saint-Raphaël, had cut down nearly ninety Spaniards who refused to surrender.
Razing rather than holding
Believing that defending the two towns would require too many men and too much ammunition, Toussaint announced his intention to take horses and cattle toward the French part, and then to raze Saint-Raphaël and Saint-Michel to keep the enemy at a distance.
