The Association of Haitian Genealogists is calling into question Dessalines' date of birth

The Association of Haitian Genealogists is questioning historical data regarding the birth of Jean Jacques Dessalines. According to Radio Métropole, Didier Gilles, a member of this organization, asserts that civil records from the era as well as editions of the Political and Economic Gazette of Haiti published in 1806 designate July 25 as the emperor's birthday, instead of the official date of September 20.

Origin of the surname and parentage

According to the researcher interviewed by Métropole, the head of state was a Creole born into slavery in Saint-Domingue. He took the name of his owner, Janvier Dessalines, who had settled on the Petit Cormier plantation located in Grande Rivière du Nord. Archival documents also indicate that Jean Jacques was enslaved on this estate with his mother, Marie Françoise, and his sister, Anne.

Digitization of documentary heritage

According to the speaker from Radio Métropole, genealogists are continuing, without public assistance, a project to digitize the databases of the National Archives of Haiti that began in 2000. Their work has already made it possible to interconnect more than 104,000 people. The group plans to revamp its virtual space shortly in order to share these archives with the public.

Social action in Turgeau

On the sidelines of this anniversary, the Sogebank Foundation and the Turgeau Veterans Association carried out a distribution for residents of the Turgeau sector, according to what Le National reports.
