Born on March 6, 1949, in Marchand-Dessalines, Jean-Louis dedicated several decades to law and teaching law in Haiti. After studying legal sciences at the Law and Economics School of Gonaïves, he was quickly promoted to lawyer and then to deputy prosecutor before joining the Court of Cassation in November 2011.
In February 2021, part of the political opposition designated Jean-Louis to lead a transition following the death of President Jovenel Moïse. This move, however, was not recognized by the sitting government, and a decree retiring Jean-Louis, along with two other judges from the Court of Cassation, was signed.
Judicial Career
Before this period of political turmoil, Joseph Mécène Jean-Louis had built a long career in Haiti's judicial and academic systems. His tenure at the Court of Cassation was marked by his participation in several important hearings.
Final Days and Death
A victim of a stroke in 2021, Jean-Louis had since been in fragile health, constantly under medical observation. He died from respiratory complications at the age of 77.
