Eighty-nine years ago, on October 7, 1937, Jean-Rénald Clérismé, a Haitian Catholic priest, anthropologist, diplomat, and politician, was born. Some sources, however, place his birth on November 7, 1937.

From Priesthood to University

He began his career as a Catholic priest before later leaving the priesthood. In 1967, he obtained a license in France, followed by a master's degree in anthropology from New York University in 1975. In 1993, he earned a master's degree in philosophy at Yale, where he defended his doctorate in anthropology as a Fulbright scholar in 1996. His thesis focused on Haitian workers on the El Fondo coffee plantations and migration within the Dominican Republic's coffee economy. He also authored other scholarly works dedicated to Haitian society.

In Service of Diplomacy

From 2001 to 2003, he represented Haiti at several international organizations dealing with trade, development, and telecommunications.

On June 9, 2006, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 2008. Jean-Rénald Clérismé died on October 29, 2013, in Port-au-Prince.
