Born into a prominent family, his father was a justice of the peace and former deputy, while his grandfather had been an aristocrat under the Empire of Faustin Soulouque. By the time he was twelve, he already dreamed of becoming a writer.
He earned his baccalaureate at the Lycée Pétion in 1895 thanks to the intervention of deputy Guillaume Sam. After studying medicine in Paris and pursuing a diplomatic career, he returned to Haiti to teach and to found the Institute of Ethnology.
Price-Mars held various political posts, notably serving as a minister under Élie Lescot and later Joseph Nemours Pierre-Louis. He also distinguished himself through his commitment to the social sciences in Haiti and internationally through congresses of Black literature.
