The fire that hit a technical room at the entrance to the French embassy in Haiti has been put out and caused no casualties, the embassy itself said. According to Le Quotidien 509, the fire broke out overnight from Friday to Saturday, November 7, at the Champ-de-Mars in Port-au-Prince.
The Embassy's Message
The embassy posted its message on Saturday morning on its X account, in French and Creole. It states: "The fire is now out and there are no casualties to report." The person who issued the statement is not identified beyond the institution. The embassy also thanks the firefighters who were deployed to contain the blaze, as well as the many messages of support it received.
What Is Not Known
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage have not been disclosed.
A Building Closed to the Public
Also according to Le Quotidien 509, the affected building, located at 51 rue Capois, has not been open to the public for more than a year. The embassy had closed its consular services on March 19, 2025, because of insecurity in the city center. They reopened on May 5, 2025, and are housed, until further notice, in the premises of the European Union Delegation at 19 rue Borno in Pétion-Ville, by appointment only.
The outlet notes that the French embassy remains the last diplomatic mission still located in the historic center of the capital.
