The match was highly anticipated by the Dominican press, which qualifies it as a great Caribbean and historical derby. Both teams arrived undefeated before this match according to various local media, each having accumulated six points after two previous matches.

Haiti quickly took the lead at the 9th minute with a goal from Louicius Deedson. Wilson Isidor doubled the score at the 51st minute before Dorny Romero reduced the deficit for the Dominican Republic four minutes later. Haiti then came back strong, scoring two more times by Wilson Isidor and Yassin Fortuné.

This victory confirms Haiti's historical dominance over its Caribbean neighbor with eleven wins against one for the Dominican Republic since their first encounters in 1967. The match was also celebrated by the public, who turned out in large numbers despite damage to the grass caused by a concert a few days earlier.
