Among the former officials under sanctions are Michel Martelly, Laurent Lamothe, Jocelerme Privert, Jean-Henry Céant, Youri Latortue, Joseph Lambert, Rony Célestin, Hervé Fourcand, Gary Bodeau, Nenel Cassy, Gracia Delva, Arnel Bélizaire, and Prophane Victor. Canada has sanctioned these personalities since 2022. The United States has also taken measures against some of them, such as Laurent Lamothe in 2023 for "significant corruption," which results in general ineligibility to enter the United States.
International sanctions can include asset freezes and financial or territorial restrictions, but they do not automatically constitute a judicial conviction. These personalities are seeking to reposition themselves in political life despite these restrictive measures.
Persistent Influence
Although sanctioned, certain figures maintain their political influence through parties or political alliances. Their return to the electoral scene raises important questions: what are the official reasons for the sanctions? Do those involved contest these measures? What steps have they taken to remedy them?
Political Record
The debate should not only focus on candidacies but also on the record of these personalities when they held government positions. Their past decisions and results deserve careful examination.
