Dominicans among the largest groups of migrants in Philadelphia

An analysis by The Associated Press based on federal immigration records shows that Dominicans are among the main groups of migrants arriving in Philadelphia after crossing the US-Mexico border. The data, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, covers about 4.5 million migrants released in the United States between October 2018 and July 2025 after crossing the southern border.

Philadelphia attracts migrants from all over the world. At least eleven nationalities have recorded more than a thousand arrivals, with Brazil, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic being the most prominent. The metropolitan region has also welcomed over a thousand migrants from Georgia.

The analysis shows that the recent surge in migration extends beyond traditional destinations like New York and Miami, with a growing trend towards smaller cities and diverse communities across the country. Nearly six out of ten migrants released after crossing the southern border are women and children.

The data indicates a significant demographic shift in migration flows, with a strong presence of women and children compared to previous periods when immigration was predominantly male. However, it is important to note that some information provided by migrants was not always verified.

These records offer a detailed look at the demographic and geographic changes generated by the recent surge in migration to the United States, including communities where there is an increase in the Dominican population.
